Marius - Muis voor zijn familie, Maas voor zijn vrienden - is een buitenbeentje. Niet zo stoer als zijn broer, en het liefst is hij bij zijn opa of kijkt hij naar de sterren, want hij wil astronaut worden.
Elke keer als hij naar zijn opa wandelt, komt hij langs een inrichting. De 'gekken' achter het hek fascineren hem. Dan krijgt Marius het aan de stok met Vogelpoep, de gevaarlijk ogende grote jongen die volgens de verhalen in het dorp ook gek zou zijn. Marius twijfelt steeds meer aan zichzelf: waar ligt de scheidslijn tussen dromen en gek zijn?
Spannend, treffend en aangrijpend: in een veelbewogen halfjaar leert Marius zichzelf én zijn familie beter kennen, want opa heeft ook nog een geheim...
